Color Pencil Drawing from 2003 Student.

Da Vinci and Rembrandt reportedly believed that drawing is a skill that can be learned, much like handwriting.  I also believe that drawing is a skill that everyone is capable of learning.  I believe in encouraging my students to begin to discover their strengths and weaknesses in drawing and compare their work to no one else but only work on improvement.  After all, there is always someone out there better than you are as an artist, so why compare yourself to others.

I also believe in using every aid possible to further develop your skills.  I stumbled on this information that shows that students should draw from life, from photographs and from masterpieces, which is included in this paper called Drawing Myths.  It only makes since to me, as most of the early masters in art worked with and copied from their teachers as young apprentices.

If you  wish to develop your skills, begin now, read everything you can, join a group of artists that want to learn, draw often and take drawing!  Good luck and have fun!
